@sbalatan Teslas do the opposite of this though. They autopilot until crash probability is high and then turn autopilot off seconds before the crash.

Tesla autopilot is almost 10 times safer when engaged than the average driver. The Tesla team is amazing and redefining safety metrics and saving lives along the way. Huge congrats to the team.

@WholeMarsBlog Essentially, passive Autopilot (car intervenes only when crash probability is high) cuts crashes in half. Active Autopilot (car is driving itself) cuts crashes in half again. Doesn’t mean there are no crashes, but, on balance, Autopilot is unequivocally safer.
