Soaked from the rain and likely exhausted after a physical, competitive 90 minutes against OL Reign on Friday, Portland Thorns midfielder Hina Sugita looked up in the stands and displayed a wide, infectious smile. She raised her hands and waved at a swath of fans chanting her name and waving Japanese flags, finding a slice of home and belonging in the Pacific Northwest.

The nearly 300 fans included a group of representatives and beneficiaries of the Japan-America Society of Oregon, which linked up with the Thorns to fill Section 221 of Providence Park and support Sugita.
