Emergency departments everywhere struggling at the moment. @RCollEM @Jploughrey @VP_Scot_RCEM
Frontline doctors have warned that Scotland is facing its worst winter on record as Covid-19 deaths almost doubled overnight and emergency departments struggled under conditions usually seen in January.
Consultants are dealing with problems that are more usually encountered in hospitals during a tough winter. These include acute bed shortages and patients being cared for in the wrong department for their condition.
The Royal College of Emergency Medicine in Scotland said that the country had entered the pandemic with too few hospital beds. Now, when more wards are again needed for coronavirus patients, they are also dealing with more people arriving with serious undiagnosed illnesses such as heart conditions and diabetes.
