The Manchester & Salford Yeomanry were a force of volunteer soldiers working for local government, made up of local businessmen and hostile to reformers. Hugh Hornby Birley, Manchester mill owner & captain of the yeomanry, ordered the soldiers into the crowd.#OTD #Peterloo2019.
